Se construy\u00f3 en el siglo XIV, y en tiempos de guerra se tra\u00edan aqu\u00ed para protegerlas valiosas reliquias de la antigua capital, Mtsjeta. Sobre ella se eleva el monte Kazbek, un volc\u00e1n extinto de 5.047 metros.
