Todo el r\u00edo Athabasca cae por un escal\u00f3n de cuarcita dura hacia una garganta estrecha que ha excavado en la caliza m\u00e1s blanda de abajo. Unos cauces antiguos, hoy secos, muestran por d\u00f3nde pasaba antes el r\u00edo, y se puede caminar por uno de ellos. Las cataratas est\u00e1n junto a la Icefields Parkway, a unos 30 kil\u00f3metros al sur de Jasper.
