Para contar como isla, un trozo de tierra debe quedar sobre el agua todo el a\u00f1o y tener al menos un \u00e1rbol. Algunas islas tienen grandes casas de verano que construyeron familias ricas en la Edad Dorada; otras son solo una roca con un pino. El Parque Nacional de las Mil Islas, creado en 1904, protege muchas de ellas.
