Antiguos relatos cuentan que tuvo m\u00e1s arcos; uno se derrumb\u00f3 en 1845 y dej\u00f3 un pilar aparte llamado el obelisco. El explorador franc\u00e9s Jacques Cartier naveg\u00f3 por esta costa en 1534, y durante siglos el pueblo de Perc\u00e9 vivi\u00f3 de la pesca del bacalao. La roca forma parte hoy de un parque nacional.
