Cuenta la leyenda que unos \u00e1ngeles le pidieron a un joven pastor llamado B\u00e9n\u00e9zet que lo construyera, y que \u00e9l demostr\u00f3 su misi\u00f3n levantando una piedra enorme. El puente tuvo unos veintid\u00f3s arcos, pero las crecidas del R\u00f3dano lo romp\u00edan una y otra vez, y en el siglo XVII se abandon\u00f3 definitivamente; solo quedan cuatro arcos. Es famoso en todo el mundo por la canci\u00f3n infantil Sur le pont d&#8217;Avignon.
