Su Vieux Bassin, o d\u00e1rsena vieja, se excav\u00f3 en el siglo XVII por orden de Colbert, ministro de Luis XIV, y est\u00e1 bordeado de casas altas y estrechas, muchas cubiertas de pizarra para protegerlas del clima marino. Desde Honfleur partieron exploradores hacia el Nuevo Mundo, entre ellos Samuel de Champlain, que zarp\u00f3 de aqu\u00ed en 1608 y fund\u00f3 la ciudad de Quebec. En el siglo XIX llegaron pintores atra\u00eddos por su luz, y se convirti\u00f3 en una de las cunas del impresionismo.
