En el siglo XIX era el punto de partida de cacer\u00edas \u00e1rticas y expediciones polares, entre ellas las de Roald Amundsen, y todav\u00eda se la llama la puerta del \u00c1rtico. Hoy tiene una universidad, un museo polar y la Catedral del \u00c1rtico, y es uno de los mejores lugares del mundo para ver la aurora boreal.
