Viv\u00edan, rezaban y estudiaban en ellas, y decoraron muchas con pinturas murales; los cient\u00edficos han descubierto que algunas, del siglo VII, se cuentan entre las pinturas al \u00f3leo m\u00e1s antiguas conocidas del mundo. El paisaje cultural del valle es Patrimonio de la Humanidad desde 2003.
