Lo construy\u00f3 en 1637 y 1638 Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, que unific\u00f3 But\u00e1n, y fue la sede del gobierno hasta que la capital se traslad\u00f3 a Timbu en 1955. Un dzong es a la vez fortaleza, monasterio y edificio de oficinas.
