Lo construyeron los cruzados en 1228, y sus constructores reutilizaron antiguas columnas romanas, coloc\u00e1ndolas atravesadas en los muros para reforzarlos. La propia Sid\u00f3n, a unos 40 kil\u00f3metros al sur de Beirut, fue una de las grandes ciudades fenicias, famosa por su vidrio y por el tinte p\u00farpura que se obten\u00eda de caracoles marinos.
