Los primeros ermita\u00f1os se instalaron en sus cuevas en el siglo IV, y hacia el a\u00f1o 480 se fund\u00f3 un monasterio. Destruido por los persas en 614 y abandonado despu\u00e9s, la Iglesia ortodoxa griega lo reconstruy\u00f3 entre 1878 y 1901, y todav\u00eda viven en \u00e9l algunos monjes.
