Sus comerciantes y marineros traficaban con la India, Irak y \u00c1frica oriental, llevando d\u00e1tiles, caballos, especias y madera. Para proteger la ciudad se levantaron murallas, la \u00faltima en 1920; se derrib\u00f3 en 1957, cuando la ciudad creci\u00f3, pero algunas de sus puertas siguen en pie.
