La ciudad se abandon\u00f3 en la Edad Media y sus habitantes se trasladaron a la colina donde hoy est\u00e1 Sel\u00e7uk. Las excavaciones empezaron en la d\u00e9cada de 1860, cuando un ingeniero ingl\u00e9s busc\u00f3 y por fin encontr\u00f3 el lugar del templo de Artemisa, y los arque\u00f3logos austriacos trabajan aqu\u00ed desde hace m\u00e1s de un siglo. \u00c9feso es Patrimonio de la Humanidad desde 2015.
