Su primera torre se levant\u00f3 en el siglo XII para proteger el puerto, y en 1397 se acord\u00f3 aqu\u00ed la Uni\u00f3n de Kalmar, que reuni\u00f3 a Dinamarca, Noruega y Suecia bajo una sola corona. En el siglo XVI, el rey Gustavo Vasa y sus hijos convirtieron la fortaleza en un palacio renacentista, con torres redondas y tejados de cobre, rodeado de murallas, foso y bastiones.
