Se form\u00f3 al construirse la presa de Kariba sobre el r\u00edo Zambeze entre 1955 y 1959, y por volumen sigue siendo el mayor lago artificial del mundo. Mientras sub\u00eda el agua, un rescate llamado Operaci\u00f3n No\u00e9 llev\u00f3 a miles de animales desde las islas que se iban hundiendo hasta la orilla. El pueblo tonga, que viv\u00eda en el valle, tuvo que marcharse, y muchos siguen diciendo que su dios del r\u00edo, Nyami Nyami, vigila la presa.
