Bajo el dominio portugu\u00e9s se llamaba Louren\u00e7o Marques, por un comerciante del siglo XVI que explor\u00f3 la bah\u00eda, y tom\u00f3 su nombre actual en 1976, tras la independencia. Muchas de sus anchas avenidas, bordeadas de jacarandas y flamboyanes, llevan nombres de l\u00edderes revolucionarios como Karl Marx, Lenin y Mao Zedong. En 2018 se inaugur\u00f3 sobre la bah\u00eda el puente Maputo-Katembe, entonces el puente colgante m\u00e1s largo de \u00c1frica.
