En la Antig\u00fcedad fue Cirta, la capital de los reyes n\u00famidas, y recibi\u00f3 su nombre por el emperador romano Constantino el Grande, que la reconstruy\u00f3 a principios del siglo IV. Sus muchos puentes sobre la garganta le han dado el nombre de Ciudad de los Puentes. El puente colgante de Sidi M&#8217;Cid, inaugurado en 1912, cuelga a unos 175 metros sobre el r\u00edo y fue entonces el puente m\u00e1s alto del mundo.
