Las obras empezaron en 1452 y deb\u00eda alcanzar unos 167 metros, lo que la habr\u00eda convertido en el edificio m\u00e1s alto del mundo, pero se acab\u00f3 el dinero y la parte superior nunca se construy\u00f3. La torre tiene dos carillones, y Malinas se convirti\u00f3 en el centro de la m\u00fasica de carill\u00f3n: aqu\u00ed se abri\u00f3 en 1922 la primera escuela de carill\u00f3n del mundo, que todav\u00eda forma a int\u00e9rpretes de muchos pa\u00edses.
