De 1185 a 1393 fue el coraz\u00f3n de la capital del Segundo Imperio B\u00falgaro, con el palacio real y la iglesia del Patriarca dentro de sus murallas, hasta que la ciudad cay\u00f3 en manos otomanas. Las murallas y las torres de las puertas se han reconstruido en parte, y la catedral patriarcal de la cima se restaur\u00f3 en 1981 y se decor\u00f3 por dentro con llamativos murales modernos. Algunas noches un espect\u00e1culo de luz y sonido ilumina toda la colina.
