El nombre del templo suele traducirse como &#8216;ciudadela de las mujeres&#8217;, quiz\u00e1 por lo delicado de sus tallas. Estuvo oculto en la selva hasta 1914, y en 1923 el joven escritor franc\u00e9s Andr\u00e9 Malraux fue detenido por arrancar diosas talladas de sus muros.
