Los portugueses construyeron aqu\u00ed el primer fuerte a finales del siglo XVI, y los neerlandeses, que lo tomaron en 1640, lo reconstruyeron con las enormes murallas de piedra que todav\u00eda rodean el casco antiguo. Dentro se conservan calles de casas coloniales, iglesias, una mezquita y peque\u00f1as tiendas, y todo el fuerte es Patrimonio de la Humanidad desde 1988. La torre del reloj se a\u00f1adi\u00f3 en 1883 cerca de la puerta principal.
