En toda su vida tiene solo dos hojas, que no dejan de crecer desde la base y se parten en largas cintas retorcidas tendidas sobre la arena. Se cree que algunas plantas tienen m\u00e1s de 1000 a\u00f1os, y obtienen gran parte del agua de la niebla que llega del Atl\u00e1ntico. Lleva el nombre del bot\u00e1nico austriaco Friedrich Welwitsch, que la estudi\u00f3 en Angola.
