Meroe fue la capital del reino de Kush, cuyos reyes y reinas gobernaron el Nilo medio durante casi mil a\u00f1os y fueron enterrados aqu\u00ed bajo pir\u00e1mides peque\u00f1as y empinadas entre el a\u00f1o 300 a. C. y el 350 aproximadamente. M\u00e1s de 200 pir\u00e1mides se alzan en tres cementerios sobre las crestas arenosas. El lugar es Patrimonio de la Humanidad de la UNESCO.
