This journey follows them from their homelands to the farthest place they reached, using the sites they left behind.

Start at the royal mounds of Gamla Uppsala, the old heart of the Norse gods, and the stone ships of Anundshög, then sail to Birka, Gotland and the great stone ship of Ales Stenar. In Denmark, visit the Viking ships of Roskilde, the ring fortresses of Trelleborg and Fyrkat, Harald Bluetooth’s rune stone at Jelling, the old market town of Ribe and the graves of Lindholm Høje. Cross to Norway for its fjords, Bergen, Trondheim and the chieftain’s hall at Borg in Lofoten.

Then go west like the Vikings did: to Shetland and Orkney, which stayed Norse until the 15th century, to Lindisfarne, where the Viking Age began with a raid in 793, to York, the Viking city of Jorvik, to Dublin, which they founded, and to Normandy, the land of the Northmen. Sail on to Iceland, where settlers founded the Althing at Þingvellir in 930, past Greenland, which Erik the Red settled, and finish at L’Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, where Norse sailors lived around the year 1000.
