About Elephant’s Tooth, Oatman

Above the old mining town of Oatman rises the Elephant’s Tooth, a pale tower of volcanic rock in the Black Mountains of western Arizona. Below it lie the ruins of the Tom Reed mine, one of the gold mines that made Oatman rich in the early 1900s, glowing gold and orange in the evening light. For early travellers on Route 66, the narrow road over these mountains, with its hairpin bends and steep drops, was one of the scariest parts of the journey.

Puzzle tip: the golden rock tower is the key; the blue sky and the dark slopes come last.
