The colours appear when trees stop making chlorophyll, the green pigment they use to turn sunlight into food. As the green fades, yellow and orange pigments that were there all along begin to show, and some trees, such as maples, also make new red pigments in their leaves. Cool, sunny days and chilly nights bring out the brightest reds. Each puzzle comes with a short text about the place where it was taken.
Tip for autumn puzzles: sort the leaves by colour, from red to orange to yellow, and use paths, bridges and tree trunks as lines to build the picture around.
