About Golden Larches on Pocaterra Ridge, Kananaskis

Golden larches cover the slopes below Pocaterra Ridge in Kananaskis Country, in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, one of the best places in Canada for larch season. The ridge rises beside Highway 40, which crosses Highwood Pass at about 2,200 metres, the highest paved road in Canada. It is named after George Pocaterra, an Italian who came to Alberta in the early twentieth century, ran a ranch and explored these mountains with his Stoney Nakoda friends. In this photo grey limestone peaks with tilted layers rise above a valley of yellow larches and dark spruces.

Puzzle tip: start with the tilted layers of the grey peaks, then the yellow larches, and finish with the clouds over the summits.
