About Sea Cliffs and Beach, Kauaʻi

Kauaʻi is the oldest of Hawaii's main islands, formed by a volcano about five million years ago. Since then, rain, rivers and waves have had a long time to wear it down, carving the steep cliffs and deep valleys that make it so dramatic. Its west coast is the sunniest and driest part of the island, where long beaches lie below the end of the high sea cliffs.

Puzzle tip: the pale beach and the white surf make a clear line, so build them first; the dark cliff comes next.
