About Moss-Covered Trees in the Hoh Rain Forest

The Hoh Rain Forest, on the western side of Olympic National Park in Washington, is one of the finest temperate rain forests in the world. It receives 3.5 metres of rain or more a year, and the damp air lets mosses, ferns and lichens cover almost every surface. Sitka spruces and western hemlocks grow very tall here, and bigleaf maples hold thick hanging curtains of club moss. The short Hall of Mosses trail passes through the best of it. This photo shows mossy branches and trunks in many shades of green.

Puzzle tip: start with the trunks and the brightest patches of light, then sort the mosses by their many shades of green.
