About Lavender Field in Valensole at Dusk

Lavender has been grown in Provence for a long time, but the great purple fields of the Valensole plateau date mainly from the twentieth century, when perfume makers in the nearby town of Grasse and elsewhere needed large amounts of oil. The plateau lies at about five hundred metres above sea level, with dry, stony soil and long sunny summers that the plant loves. Each field is cut by machine in July, and the stems are taken to local distilleries. In this photo the flowers fill the whole frame under a soft pink and violet sky.

Puzzle tip: start with the sharp flowers in the front, then the rows in the middle, and finish with the far hills and the pink sky.
