About Makhtesh Ramon, Negev Desert

Makhtesh Ramon, in the Negev Desert of southern Israel, is about 40 kilometres long, up to 10 kilometres wide and some 500 metres deep. It looks like a crater, but it was not made by a meteorite or a volcano: over millions of years, water wore away the soft rock under a harder layer, leaving a deep valley with steep walls all around. A makhtesh is a landform found almost only in this region. The town of Mitzpe Ramon sits on its northern rim, and ibex often wander along its edge.

Puzzle tip: the far rim of the crater is a clear line across the picture; the layers of rock below are easier to sort by colour.
