About Rocamadour on Its Cliff

Rocamadour is a village built into a cliff about a hundred and fifty metres above the canyon of the Alzou, in the Lot region of south-western France. In the Middle Ages it was one of the great pilgrimage sites of Europe, visited by kings and saints, after a body believed to be that of a hermit called Amadour was found here in 1166. Pilgrims climbed the long Grand Staircase to the chapels, some of them on their knees. In this photo the village, its sanctuaries and the castle on top are stacked one above the other on the pale rock face.

Puzzle tip: start with the castle and chapels on top, then the cliff and the houses, and finish with the dark trees and the sky.
