About Shaman Rock on Olkhon Island, Lake Baikal

Lake Baikal in Siberia is the deepest lake in the world, at 1,642 metres, and one of the oldest, formed about 25 million years ago. It holds around a fifth of all the fresh water in the world's lakes and rivers. Shaman Rock, a pale crag of marble with two peaks, rises from the water beside the village of Khuzhir on Olkhon, the largest island in the lake. For the Buryat people who live around Baikal it is a sacred place, and in winter the clear ice around it draws visitors from all over the world.

Puzzle tip: the pale rock stands out against the deep blue water, so start there; the tree branches in front are best left for last.
