About The Latona Fountain and the Grand Canal, Versailles

The gardens of Versailles were laid out from the 1660s by André Le Nôtre for King Louis XIV, along a great axis that runs west from the palace to the horizon. Halfway down the slope stands the Latona Fountain, finished in the 1670s and later raised on its tiers of marble. It tells a story from the Roman poet Ovid: Latona, mother of Apollo and Diana, turned the peasants who insulted her into frogs and lizards, which you can see around the basin. Beyond it the view runs down to the Grand Canal, more than one and a half kilometres long.

Puzzle tip: start with the gilded fountain in front, then the paths and the hedges, and finish with the long canal and the sky.
