Azerbaijan lies where Europe meets Asia, between the Caucasus Mountains and the Caspian Sea. Our Azerbaijan puzzles focus on Baku, its capital, and above all on the walled Old City at its heart.

The Old City of Baku, called Icherisheher, is a maze of stone lanes, mosques and caravanserais protected as a World Heritage Site together with the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, built for the rulers of the region in the fifteenth century, and the mysterious Maiden Tower, whose age and purpose are still debated. Baku sits about 28 metres below sea level, making it the lowest-lying national capital in the world.
Azerbaijan is often called the land of fire, because natural gas seeps from the ground and burns in places. At the Ateshgah fire temple near Baku, pilgrims once came to pray beside such flames.
