Santo Domingo, founded at the end of the fifteenth century, is the oldest European city in the Americas. Its Colonial Zone is a World Heritage Site, and the Fortaleza Ozama, begun in 1502, is the oldest European military building in the New World.
The country also has the highest mountain in the Caribbean, Pico Duarte, but it is best known for its coast. On the north shore, Playa Grande is a wide beach backed by cliffs and palms, and near Monte Cristi, in the far north-west, a sandbar appears among turquoise shallows.
