Petra Treasury Facade
Petra was carved into rose-coloured sandstone cliffs by the Nabataeans, a people of traders who grew rich from the caravan routes more than 2,000 years ago. Its most famous façade, the Treasury, appears at the end of a narrow canyon called the Siq, and a long climb leads to the even larger Monastery.
Wadi Rum is a wide valley of red sand and towering rock mountains, with natural arches such as the Burdah Rock Bridge; its landscape has often been used in films to represent Mars. In the north, Jerash is one of the best-preserved Roman cities outside Italy, with a long street lined with columns.
