Colonia was founded by the Portuguese in 1680 on the River Plate, directly across from Buenos Aires, and changed hands between Portugal and Spain many times. Its old quarter, a World Heritage Site, keeps cobbled streets, stone houses, flowering walls and a lighthouse built among the ruins of an old convent.
