Angel Falls is the highest uninterrupted waterfall in the world, dropping about 979 metres from the edge of a flat-topped mountain called Auyán-tepui. It is named after the American pilot Jimmie Angel, who flew over it in the 1930s, and lies in Canaima National Park, a World Heritage Site.
The tepuis, table mountains with sheer cliffs, rise like islands above the rainforest; Mount Roraima inspired the novel The Lost World by Arthur Conan Doyle. Off the coast, the Los Roques archipelago is a national park of coral islands, white sand and clear turquoise water.
