About Blue Mesa Badlands, Petrified Forest

The Blue Mesa area of Petrified Forest National Park is a landscape of rounded hills striped in blue, purple and grey. The layers are clay and sandstone laid down about 220 million years ago, when this dry land was a swampy forest full of early dinosaurs. The park is also famous for its logs of petrified wood, trees that slowly turned to colourful stone.

Puzzle tip: the purple and white stripes are the key; follow the grooves down each slope.
