About Golden Lancehead on a Branch, Snake Island

The golden lancehead (Bothrops insularis) is named for its pale golden-brown skin. It spends much of its time in the trees, waiting on branches for the birds that stop on the island during their migrations. Its venom is strong and works quickly, so a bitten bird cannot fly far. This snake was photographed on the island by the Brazilian researcher Otavio Marques.

Puzzle tip: the snake's golden coils are the brightest part; the dark leaves and branches behind it need patience.
