About Cracked Earth near Maracaibo, Venezuela

The land around Lake Maracaibo in north-western Venezuela has a hot climate with a long dry season. When the rains stop, the clay soil of ponds and fields dries out and shrinks, and it splits into a pattern of cracks with five or six sides, much like the cells of a honeycomb. Each crack grows until it meets another, and the next heavy rain softens the clay and makes it smooth again.

Puzzle tip: the cloudy sky and the horizon are the easiest part; the cracked ground is best built from the bottom row upwards.
