About Nyhavn, Copenhagen

Nyhavn, meaning "New Harbour", is a canal in the centre of Copenhagen lined with brightly painted townhouses, cafés and old wooden sailing ships. It was dug in the 1670s under King Christian V to bring ships from the sea right into the city's King's New Square. Sailors and merchants once filled its inns, and the writer Hans Christian Andersen, famous for fairy tales such as The Little Mermaid, lived in three different houses along the canal.

Puzzle tip: the colourful houses are best sorted by colour; the masts of the ships and the water come next.
