About Metekhi Church and Old Tbilisi

Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, grew up where the Mtkvari River runs through a narrow gorge, beside warm sulphur springs that gave the city its name: tbili means "warm" in Georgian. On a cliff above the river stands Metekhi Church, built in the 13th century where a royal fortress once stood. Behind it, the city climbs the hills in layers of old houses, churches and newer districts.

Puzzle tip: start with the church on its rocky cliff and the river below; the busy city behind is best worked in small patches.
