Metekhi Church and Old Tbilisi
Tbilisi was founded in the fifth century, and its name comes from the Georgian word for warm, after the sulphur hot springs that still feed the bathhouses of the old town. Above the river rise the walls of Narikala Fortress and the Metekhi Church, while the lanes below are lined with houses with carved wooden balconies.
Batumi, the main city of the Adjara region, is a lively resort with a long seafront boulevard, palm trees and a Ferris wheel, set between green hills and the sea. In the Greater Caucasus, the 14th-century Gergeti Trinity Church stands high above the village of Stepantsminda, below the snowy cone of Mount Kazbek.
