About Main Market Square, Kraków

Kraków's Main Market Square was laid out in 1257 and is one of the largest medieval town squares in Europe. In the middle stands the Cloth Hall, once a covered market for cloth merchants and rebuilt in the Renaissance style after a fire in 1555. Beside it rises St Mary's Basilica, whose two towers have different heights. Every hour a trumpeter plays a short tune from the taller tower and stops in the middle of a note, in memory of a watchman said to have been struck by an arrow while sounding the alarm.

Puzzle tip: the long row of arches of the Cloth Hall is the best place to start; the pigeons on the pavement are tricky, so leave them for later.
