About Motława Riverside, Gdańsk

Gdańsk grew rich as a port of the Hanseatic League, the medieval alliance of trading cities around the Baltic Sea, and its merchants built tall, narrow houses along the Motława River. The riverside is also home to the great wooden port crane, which was used to load ships and raise masts from the 15th century onwards. Much of the old town was destroyed in 1945 and carefully rebuilt in the following decades. In 1980 the shipyard of Gdańsk gave birth to Solidarity, the trade union that helped bring democracy to Poland.

Puzzle tip: the white boat is a clear starting point; the colourful houses and their reflections come next.
