About Pancake Rocks Coast, Punakaiki

Punakaiki’s Pancake Rocks stand on the west coast of New Zealand’s South Island, within Paparoa National Park. They are made of layered limestone formed from marine material millions of years ago. Rain, wind and waves have worn the stone into stacks, narrow openings and surge pools. At high tide, seawater can rush through openings below the rocks and burst upward as spray. The photograph shows the rough stone in the foreground, with forest, sea and distant hills beyond, so each part of the coast has a different texture.

Puzzle tip: start with the layered rock stacks, then use the forest line to position the sea and distant hills.
