About New Zealand
On the South Island, Milford Sound was carved by glaciers and then flooded by the sea, and Aoraki/Mount Cook, the country's highest mountain, rises above the Hooker Valley. Lakes such as Tekapo and Wakatipu fill valleys left by the glaciers of the ice ages, and on the wild west coast the sea has worn the limestone of Punakaiki into the layered Pancake Rocks.
The North Island is shaped by volcanoes. Around Rotorua, hot springs, steam and bubbling mud show the heat just below the ground, as in the bright Champagne Pool at Wai-O-Tapu. At the southern tip of the island, Wellington has been the capital since 1865.
