About Golden Larches in Banff National Park

Larch season in Banff National Park, in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, Canada, comes in late September, when the larches turn bright gold. The subalpine larch is an unusual conifer: its soft needles change colour and fall every autumn, unlike those of the pines and spruces around it. For two or three weeks hikers crowd the high valleys to see them, a season locals call larch madness. Banff, founded in 1885, is the oldest national park in Canada. In this photo a forest of golden larches and dark spruces spreads below snowy peaks and a heavy grey sky.

Puzzle tip: start with the snowy peaks, then the golden larches, and finish with the dark spruces and the grey clouds.
